When shopping for a leather sofa you have to consider several factors to ensure you are selecting the right model for you. Luckily at P&A Furnishings, you don’t have to compromise on design and style in order to find a comfortable and supportive quality leather sofa that will last the test of time.
A leather sofa can be considered more of an investment than a fabric sofa as quality leather can be more expensive. Therefore, it is important to understand the types of leather and the benefits in order to find a suitable centrepiece for your living area. Unlike many furniture retailers, we are manufacturers and our staff come from furniture production backgrounds. Therefore, we have the knowledge and expertise to talk you through the science behind your sofa whilst helping to make suggestions and recommendations on the best option for your home.
Benefits of Leather:
Leather sofas are a great option for your home as not only are they comfortable, stylish and modern but they are very hardwearing. Leather is strong, durable and resistant to tears but is also very mouldable, as such it will mould to your body shape to offer supreme comfort. Leather also has thermostatic properties so will feel warm in the Winter and cool in the Summer, maintaining your comfort and relaxation levels. It is also stain resistant and easy to clean and maintain so if cared for should continue to look as good as new in many years to come.
Leather sofa ranges:
We have an extensive range of leather sofas on display from fixed sofas to corner groups, chaise sofas, sofa beds and manual reclining and power reclining leather sofas as well as lift and rise chairs, wingback chairs, fireside chairs, swivel chairs and rocking chairs. Our sofas are also available in a variety of styles and shapes from the classic and timeless Chesterfield or Queen Anne to a modern curved sofa.
Corner sofas are very popular due to their stylish design aesthetic and practicality. Corner sofas allow you to maximise living space by sitting perfectly in the corner of a living room or lounge depending on the size and shape of your living area. They also offer more seating space than a traditional sofa making them ideal for large families or those who regularly entertain guests. Many corner sofas are also made up of different sections allowing you to extend the length of the sofa if required to make a corner group that offers additional seating.
If you are looking for a sofa with additional foot support, we also have a wide selection of leather chaise sofas which extend at one end to support the feet and manual reclining and power reclining leather sofas meaning you can lounge in comfort with your feet supported at the touch of a button or handle.
Another model created for practicality is the sofa bed. Ideal for those times when guests are visiting, our range of leather sofa beds will look and feel like a traditional sofa with the bonus of a pull-out bed.
Types of Leather:
Although there are a great variety of leather types and grades of leather, leather can usually be put into one of three categories:
- Aniline
- Semi-Aniline
- Pigmented (protected)
Aniline leather is the most natural-looking but is less resistant to soiling as it is coloured only with a dye and not with a surface coating of polymer or pigment. As such, the unique and natural surface characteristics of the hide remain visible.
Semi-Aniline is somewhere in between aniline and pigmented leather as it has a light surface coating which contains a small amount of pigment. This coating provides extra durability than aniline and ensures a consistent colour but still allows the leather to retain a natural appearance.
Pigmented leather is the most durable of leather types and so has increased protection due to the surface coating it receives. This coating provides extra durability than aniline and semi-aniline and ensures a consistent colour.
Pigmented leather can also differ depending on the grain type. Typically, the leather will be either full grain or corrected grain. Full grain means that the grain surface is left intact before applying the surface coating. With corrected grain leather, the grain surface is abraded to remove imperfections in the leather before the surface coating is applied.
There are also finishes that can be applied to leather to provide different grain appearances such as with antique grain. A special surface effect can be applied to the leather to mimic a ‘worn’, antique leather look.
At P&A Furnishings, we are able to source most types of leather including superior quality Italian leather and British leather. No matter your preference on leather sofa, we will always have a suitable model for you.
If you love the look of natural hide with its unique characteristics then an aniline leather sofa might be the one for you. However, if you are looking for the perfect sofa for the family home then you may want to consider a pigmented leather sofa for the extra protection and durability. We would usually recommend a pigmented corrected grain leather sofa in full leather, however the type you choose should largely depend on the appearance you want and the usage that your sofa is going to receive.

Construction:
It is important to factor in Longevity when shopping for a sofa, especially a more expensive leather sofa and we can guarantee quality furniture that will cost less than you might expect to pay elsewhere.
Our sofas are not only made with high quality leather on the exterior but are also constructed of a solid hard wood interior with glued and screwed frames for extra support and durability; they are made by hand and built to last!
Our sofas have a variety of fillings including feather, fibre and foam. Foam can vary from soft foam to medium foam and firm foam to offer a different sit depending on your preference.
Many of our sofas also have pocket sprung, coil sprung or sprung edge cushions for superior comfort and support. Sprung seats in a sofa act in the same way as they do in a mattress whereby the springs react to the pressure applied to the sofa to ensure that a perfect degree of support is achieved.
Sofas can also either have fixed seat cushions and fixed back cushions or loose seat cushions and loose back cushions, both of which have benefits.
A benefit of loose cushions is that they are removable, meaning they can be rotated, fluffed up and can be easily refilled if ever required in the future.
Fixed cushions are beneficial as they will not slide with being attached to the sofa. Fixed cushions tend to be used more so on reclining sofas or chairs to ensure that the cushions do not slide when the reclining mechanism is activated.
Our sofas come in a variety of designs with arm shapes ranging from flat arms, padded arms and round arms and sofa back options including standard back, high back, low back, scatter back and pillow back depending on your preferred style and support required.
There are also a variety of feet options available across our sofa ranges including metal feet, chrome feet, wooden feet, bun feet, high feet, low feet, casters, Shepherds casters and glides.
Whatever style you have in mind, we guarantee to have the perfect leather sofa for you! Visit our showroom to browse the range of leather sofas we offer and to view the quality of our products first-hand.
